"The woman is perfected."
Line one from the poem "Edge" by Sylvia Plath inspires this experimental theatre script. I had not read the Ariel collection (pictured in poster) since high school; the experience was incredibly cathartic, reflecting the feeling that the wisdom of womanhood is crushed beneath a chaotic social role. She ended her life in a tragic devastation of all that is sold as sacred in the patriarchal lie by "sticking her head in the oven" with her two infants at home. The world has been robbed of the talents of countless women throughout history who were destroyed by those closest to them, then scapegoated in the aftermath.
Female suicide has risen in recent years at rates faster than males. I want this play to inspire women to speak the truth about their struggles and build support to end the social invisibility.
How do you address a loved one, a friend, or a stranger in crisis?
What is a crisis versus an uncomfortable situation?
How much agency is a woman allowed to freely express herself?
How do different women experience social isolation/invisibility?
